Open Postdoc Position
A position for a postdoctoral research in organic fluid and gas geochemistry is available to begin in Spring 2019 in the laboratory of Dr. Jill McDermott, in the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania).
The McDermott lab is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with an interest in organic geochemistry. This position is based at Lehigh and to be funded by a NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) grant entitled "The Origins of Molecules in Diverse Space and Planetary Environments and Their Intramolecular Isotope Signatures." Led by Penn State, the NAI team includes our research group at Lehigh University, and collaborators at Caltech, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of California at Riverside, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and the Université de Nantes. More information is available at the link.
The postdoctoral researcher will examine the organic geochemistry of submarine hydrothermal vents, and/or water and gas-rich aquifers in the deep terrestrial subsurface. There will be the opportunity to use compound-specific isotope measurements to investigate fluid formation history and the biogeochemical processes that supply energy to support chemosynthetic subsurface life in these systems.
Applicants should have a PhD in chemistry, geological science, oceanography, engineering, and/or microbiology (or expect to complete their degree by Spring 2019). An interest in participating in sea-going and deep mine research expeditions is also sought. This project is multidisciplinary, and will involve collaborations with microbiologists, geologists, and other geochemists, providing opportunities for disciplinary and cross-disciplinary career development and networking.
Position includes funding for two years If interested, please send a short statement of research interests and CV to Jill McDermott (jill [dot] mcdermott [at] lehigh [dot] edu), ATTN: “Postdoc position.”
